The former Mill #3 of the Glastonbury Knitting Company, located at 501 Middle Turnpike East in Manchester, sits proudly on the north side of the Manchester Green adjacent to the National Register-listed Woodbridge Farmstead. At the October meeting of the Historic Preservation Council, its significance to the surrounding community was recognized through listing on the State Register of Historic Places.

Connecticut Trust staff Jordan Sorensen and Renée Tribert drafted the nomination for the State Register – the first step in the rehabilitation of this historic site.  The site’s listing on the State Register makes it eligible for State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits, which will assist the current owner in his plans for reuse as senior housing.

This wood frame factory, built in 1890 with later additions, is a well-preserved example of a Connecticut textile mill. The tower retains its massive wooden 5,000-gallon fire-fighting cistern. The mill was established and run by prominent residents of Manchester Green for the production of knit woolen underwear. It provided livelihoods for many local workers and was also a locus for area activities such as fire-fighting and civic gatherings.
