Landscape and gardening design are often integral to creating an appropriate setting for historic homes. We are pleased to announce that the Archives of American Gardens at the Smithsonian Institution has recently recognized the garden of current Trustee Ellen Gould of Southport.  Gould is an active member of the Garden Club of America, and the Gould Garden is now included in the Garden Club of America Collection (ID #CT758).

The above photo was taken in the front garden in the fall.  Gould says, “I love to fill my garden with dramatic colorful plant material that shows off its splendor in the autumn.”  The photo below left features a display of climbing roses that delight all who pass by the house.  At bottom right are Ellen and Richard Gould (as pictured in Fairfield County Look).  Three cheers on this incredible achievement!

With this designation, Gould follows former Trustee and current Advisory Council member Martha Alexander, whose garden at the  Elizabeth R. Hooker House, also known as the Home of Edith H. Ilmanen, was recognized by the Smithsonian in 2012
