Barns Survey
Rediscover our state’s agricultural heritage through Preservation Connecticut’s Barns Project.
Historic barns in Connecticut had been almost completely undocumented. With each barn that is lost, another piece of the state’s rich agricultural history disappears.

The statewide survey took place from 2006-2010 and involved the participation of more than 400 volunteers. After the survey was completed, Preservation Connecticut submitted a “multiple resource nomination,” which included 2,000 barns around the state, to the State Register of Historic Places. Recognizing these barns through the designation process was important, because as outbuildings, barns had rarely been included in such listings. In addition, we awarded a total of $148,687 in Barns Grants to 34 nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and private citizens from across the state. All of this was made possible with funding from the State Historic Preservation Office.
