We’ve helped local partners in New Canaan protect an irreplaceable house with an easement.
When neighbors saw the third-oldest building in New Canaan threatened by demolition, they sprung into action.
Calling themselves the “8 Ferris Associates,” the group, led by Connecticut Trust Board member Tom Nissley, sprung into action. They mustered up enough money to purchase the house for $1.5 million, and then they placed the property on the National Register of Historic Places.
Ferris Hill became the 22nd place in New Canaan with the designation, many of which are mid-century modern homes created by the so-called “Harvard Five” architects.
In addition, the group worked with the Connecticut Trust to place an easement on the property. The easement protects the exterior of the circa-1731 colonial style farmhouse from inappropriate modifications or from demolition. It allows for expansion of the house in the rear, which is the side not facing the road. By allowing an appropriate expansion, the Trust ensured that the property could be sold to buyers who might choose to renovate.
